Endangered whales swim in Sebastian Inlet

Endangered whales swim in Sebastian Inlet

by DeVore Design, February 10, 2016

A group of surfers watch a right whale in the water next to them at Sebastian Inlet on Feb.6.

An endangered 45-foot-North Atlantic right whale and her calf were seen swimming into Sebastian Inlet on Monday, News 6 Florida Today reported.

“In my 17 years of doing this, I have not seen them doing this inside of Sebastian Inlet,” Julie Albert, who runs a right whale monitoring network for the nonprofit Marine Resources Council, told Florida Today.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and scientists from Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute and Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution are monitoring the situation and trying to keep boats away from the area.

It may just be a coincidence that Florida is having a whale of a time, but right whales were spotted earlier this past weekend on Feb. 6 at Satellite Beach sharing some waves with local surfers.
