Outside the Box group goes for laughs with deep-fried Southern comedy

by DeVore Design, December 11, 2015

Humor at Outside the Box Theatre Company comes deep-fried. Their latest production nestles into place as neatly as mashed potatoes next to chicken drumsticks.

Opening at 8 p.m. Friday at the Franklin Pearce Jr. Auditorium, “Radio T. B. S. (Trailer Park Broadcasting Scandals)” reports on the comings and goings at the Luna del Mar Manufactured Home Oasis and Monkey Emporium in a gossipy small town in Florida.

Folks in town are preparing for a drive-by nativity scene honoring two kings, Jesus and Elvis.

“We focus on doing Southern comedies, so there’s a lot of silliness,” director Andre Provencher said. “If the cast has fun, then I kind of think the audiences will, too.”

The radio show is hosted by society doyennes Dixie Mandrell, played by Juli Goldstone and Vesta Poteet, played by Jessa Dodds.

Items include the devout church lady, Mary Eunice Wheaton, played by Vicki Wicks, is trying to evict a teacher of belly dancing who occupies trailer #666. Plus-sized Mayola Felts, played by Vonte Rogers, has been pushed into entering the Miss Manatee contest by her mother, Pauline Felts, played by Eilleen Elgers-Dover.

Meanwhile, Missy Goode, played by Cynthia Ros McClendon, calls in from Memphis, where she went to pay homage to Elvis but wound up in jail.

As the neighbors squabble while trying to outshine each other at the drive-by nativity scene, matters begin to fall apart.

Other actors included Angel Allen, Kasin MacCraw and Michelle Reeves.

The play, written by Mark Landon Smith, will continue at the auditorium, 17404 Sixth St., through Dec. 20.

Performances begin at 8 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students.
