How can agents best serve buyers with disabilities?

Century 21 Real Estate announced the results of its “Persons with Disabilities Home Buying Survey” to “gain insight into the current state of the real estate industry as it relates to accessible housing” on the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Harris Poll conducted the survey online in June with 503 active homebuyers who either have disabilities or live with someone who does.

Key findings: Homebuyers with special needs had a strong desire to work with an agent trained in, and knowledgeable about, accessible housing. A majority (83 percent) said a knowledgeable agent would be beneficial, while 25 percent said it’s absolutely essential.

The survey found that approximately half (49 percent) have a difficult time finding a home that fits their family’s unique needs. More than half (54 percent) rated the average real estate professionals’ knowledge of accessible housing with a grade level of “C” or below. According to the latest U.S. Census report on Americans with Disabilities, about 19 percent of the population identifies as having a disability.

“Providing critical resources (about buyers with disabilities) to our independent brokers and affiliated sales associates will help enable them to better serve this segment of the home buying and selling market,” says Rick Davidson, president and chief executive officer of Century 21 Real Estate.
